<image:title>Blog - On Holidays - Holidays and Politics: Some holidays, though, are civic in nature. These days commemorate the founding of a country, a ruler’s birthday, major historical events or treaties, the memory of particularly meaningful individuals, and so on. Though they may be celebrated with festivals that bring together community, they’re a little less family- and friend-centric. They can also be deeply contentious when the moments or ideas they celebrate are problematic (or are based on convenient versions of the truth).</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - On Holidays - My apartment stood empty and cold. A tree or decorations would have cost money I did not have to waste. To console I found some crayons, paper, and scissors and made myself a symbol of a symbol. It was not, perhaps, the most impressive tree to have ever graced a home, but it was at good six feet tall (let us not consider how long it took to make), and, as I think about it, the first tree I ever had for myself.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Context and Communication - As evening approaches, you cross the archway from paved roads to winding city streets just barely wide enough for cars--and often too peppered with random stairs and unexpected twists to allow them anyway. High Roman walls ring the Old City, and inside, hidden gems of mosaics and fountains, bustling souks, lively cafes. Almost at your limit, but almost home.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Context and Communication Part 2: The Language of Veils - In Maezam, as in many cultures, colors are often associated with emotions. While the colors of your clothing can be merely an expression of personal taste (mostly), the color of your veil on a given day is an expression of your mood. For example, if I am angry, I will wear a red veil. Or, more correctly (and this is where it gets really fun), I will wear a red veil if I want you to think that I am angry. But then again, you also know that, so maybe you believe I’m actually angry and maybe you don’t.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Review of Aether: Heroic Fantasy RPG - Aether is a tabletop roleplaying game for a high fantasy, magical, world. The rulebook is focused almost exclusively on the mechanics of the game system, without discussion of the lore or setting of a particular world, so it could be used easily with any world of the gaming groups’ preference. The game system focuses primarily on storytelling and characterization, with an emphasis on tactical combat.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Kinship 101 - There’s a lot to unpack with kinship and it can have a lot of subtle impacts on your worldbuilding. I’ll explore some of those in future posts, but for now, it’s worth thinking about what “family” means in your world, and how that varies from one place to another. You may just borrow your ideas of kinship wholesale from your own experiences, and that’s absolutely fine, just know there are different options that might have impacts. For instance, player characters are notorious for having tragic backstories. But what if a character came from a culture where “family” was the whole village in terms of emotions and responsibility. No child would strictly be affiliated with two specific parents, so they might have two parents die, but still have another twenty. Or, perhaps, if their “parents” were all dead, that might imply a backstory that’s even more horrific than it might otherwise be. Or, if a child from an avuncular-like system lost a parent, which one would it be? Would it be an emotional loss (their biological father), a loss of resources and family wealth (their uncle-father), or their mother, who is kind of all of those things. Those present alternatives for understanding traumatic backstories—does it leave a child heartbroken, impoverished, or both?</image:title>
<image:caption>On a more light-hearted note, kinship can also be a fun way to mess with your players’ and PCs’ expectations. One PC introduces her sister. And then another sister. And then an eleventh sister. And on and on. The other PCs, who are used to rather more Western styles of kinship may suspect a lie or just be baffled.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Review of A Single Moment - A Single Moment by Tobie Abad is a two-player, GM-less roleplaying game. The game starts at the end, where two opponents hung frozen in the breathless moment before they begin a duel to the death.</image:title>
<image:caption>The rest of the game is then played primarily through a series of flashbacks, with players taking turns leading each other through poignant scenes. The players weave a story together, awarding each other Choice Tokens that help decide who the outcome of a given scene will favor. These add up, eventually turning into each player earning Edges, Hatred, and Scars that will determine who emerges victorious in the final battle. And at what cost. And the whole game only runs a couple of hours. The short version? We absolutely loved this game and can’t wait to play more! What excited us most about this game? Intense Storytelling I’m personally someone who gets emotionally involved with the roleplaying characters I play. I live for moments that leave my heart pounding or me gritting my teeth in anger. Usually, though, building that sort of intensity take many sessions of getting to know a character and creating emotional tension.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Creator Spotlight: The Brass Bailey - What inspired you to create maps?</image:title>
<image:caption>Well, at first, I just looked at a dungeons map and said to myself “I bet I can do that”, so I did it. Then I got obsessed with it. I started making maps in November 2020, and I have pretty much been drawing every day since then, picking up new techniques and styles along the way. The one-page-dungeon making came from a different perspective. As I talked to my friends, and paid attention to the community there is a prevailing belief that dungeons are not fun. That concept is crazy to me because the name of the game is DUNGEONS and Dragons, THE DUNGEONS SHOULD BE FUN. So, I set out to specifically write dungeons that are fun for both players and DMs. They are only one page because most modern players want to be able to run the dungeon and be finished in one session, limiting myself to one page helps make sure that happens. I also leave a lot of the details vague so the Dungeon Master can change things where they need to. They are designed to be a skeleton that you can add your own flavor to. This way you can easily run them as a one shot or plug them into your campaign.</image:caption>

I have two goals for the future. 1-Be the cartographer for a published OSR or D&D Zine. There are a lot of awesome writers out there and I would love to make some maps for them. 2-Compile a collection of my one-page-dungeons into a small zine and publish it.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Creator Spotlight: The Brass Bailey - How did you get started in gaming?</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve been playing video games since I was a little kid. My brother and I started off on the Game Boy Color playing classics like Pokémon, Kirby, and Metroid. Like most of us, I have continued to play video games ever since. It was not until after college that I started play TTRPGs. I played my first game of D&D in 2013 with my little brother being the DM and leading us through the Lost Mines of Phandelver Campaign. I got more and more into tabletop games as an adult because it provided me with friends, community, and fun in an era where meeting new people is very different than it was when I was growing up. Now I play with a great group of friends from my local store (Prime Time Gaming) and I get to play my wife and kids. My son’s character is a fighter comedian named Tom Wilson. He literally spends each session telling bad jokes, its amazing.</image:caption>

I had a buddy of mine introduce me to a complicated game system called Rift. It involved percentile die more than anything. Soon after I discovered DnD through Acquisitions Incorporated’s YouTube channel and I’ve been playing that ever since. What inspired you to create maps? I needed some maps for my own game. I got so into them I lost track of time for a few days and realized this is something I’d like to do for a career. Maybe one day I’ll make it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Economics in a Fantasy World - A traditional economy is often mistaken for a free-market economy, but in fact a free-market economy takes work and a traditional economy is the laziest of the three. In a traditional economy, the government does more or less nothing about the economy. It is typically characterized by very small government and an extremely unregulated economy. This was the state of medieval Europe. Traditional economies typically give rise to monopolies, oligopolies, guilds and other protectionist practices. The Hanseatic League (https://youtu.be/z-TytIFw8BY) is a good example of trade monopoly that can arise under a traditional economy.</image:title>

I taught myself how to draw and map – I don’t have any qualifications and never took a class in drawing while at school. I enjoy writing fantasy too – this is really where my homebrew world came from and where my stories were all set.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Creator Spotlight: Anekdota Press - Or another example, I recently have been researching riverine transport in Imperial China. It was common on high mountain rivers for cargo ships (some as large as 150 tons) to travel upriver. To get past fast-flowing sections or rivers the ships would rely on ‘tracking.’ This was when scores of people on shore towed the ship by way of long braided bamboo ropes.</image:title>
<image:caption>A sample of a chart that lays out costs, mileage per day, and weight that Chinese river boats could carry, as well as costs for skilled and unskilled labor, including sailors and trackers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Creator Spotlight: Anekdota Press - Unfortunately (or fortunately?) the project keeps sprawling in new directions. I was originally going to include a small list of trade goods and prices. But really went down a rabbit hole and ended up spending weeks of my free time transcribing part of an eighteenth-century manuscript of the Guangzhou trade goods register, which I ultimately released as a separate product including 550 trade goods with prices and other details.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Creator Spotlight: Anekdota Press - Making ‘historically accurate’ resources might seem comical or hopelessly pedantic when TTRPGs are fictitious and mostly played in a high fantasy setting. But while I do not believe in adding historical accuracy for its own sake, I do think it can make a game more compelling in a variety of ways. By giving ideas to the GM, presenting players with more complex choices, or lending verisimilitude to the fictional world.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Creator Spotlight: Anekdota Press - All of this is detail is potentially pedantic on its own, but it has the potential to create very cinematic encounters. A team of people on the ship, maneuvering the vessel with long yaolu oars and giving orders to the trackers by drum signal. A small Wuban, a sort of chase boat, moving deftly through the rapids, keeping the tracking rope from snagging on rocks. Prodigiously brave and skillful wranglers tasked with diving into the rapids or climbing up the cliffs to free snagged towlines. And a hundred trackers precariously advancing, high on the cliffside, pulling the massive vessel upriver. Having players defend against an enemy attack or have a combat encounter in this context seems extremely interesting to me.</image:title>
